Using Beveled Subway Tile to Create A Modern, Classic Design

Classic subway tile placed in a brick-joint pattern offers a clean design and never seems to go out of style. But if you want to take a more modern approach with your design, many styles can be created by using the simple 3 x 6 tile as a starting point.

For example, if you prefer a textured look, beveled subway tile is a beautiful alternative to the original. The curved edges of beveled tile offer improved light reflection and added depth, which enhances the look of any backsplash, wall, bathtub, or shower surround.

Here are a few other ways you can incorporate beveled subway tile to achieve a modern design.

Choose the Right Finish and Pattern

Both traditional and beveled subway tiles, available in a glossy finish or a more subdued matte finish, can be used to establish a modern look, depending on the finish or pattern you choose. When choosing a finish that works best for a room, take note of the amount of natural light in the space you're designing. For example, to maximize light reflection, beveled tile with a glossy finish works best. A matte finish is better for a more contemporary option, and it also adds a touch of beauty to any room where you prefer a more muted tile.

Newer patterns can also modernize subway tile designs. Vertical brick-joint patterns, for example, can enhance a long, high wall space, and dramatic chevron or herringbone patterns are also beautiful alternatives to the classic brick pattern. Each is sure to bring attention to your backsplash or wall.

Add an Accent with Decorative Tiles

You can further accentuate a traditional or beveled subway tile design with one of many decorative tiles available. For example, one row of decorative tile at chair rail height can beautifully finish an overall look with a pop of color or texture. You can also add elegance with a natural stone accent such as a border from the Designer Elegance series. If you want to add a mosaic tile accent, go for a black and white look, such as Profiles in your shower or on your backsplash.

Choose a Multicolored Design

If you really want to add personality to your design, go with a colored beveled subway tile. The bright and bold hues available nowadays go far beyond classic white. For instance, create an accent wall with the vibrant shades available in the Bright series. And for an even more contemporary design, combine two contrasting colors in vertical lines, such as a dark neutral brown and a lighter pastel shade like those found in the Matte series.

When looking for a fresh take on a classic tile look, new beveled subway tile designs offer excellent choices. Start by choosing the right color, finish, and pattern, and then consider adding decorative accent tiles. For more inspiration, check out the Inspiration Gallery or visit a retail dealer near you.
